Bass ready to switch?
Corona (Calif.) Centennial running back Ryan Bass had a monster senior season, rushing for 2,608 yards on 345 carries and an unbelievable 47 touchdowns in leading his squad to a 13-2 record and Division I state championship game berth. Bass is expected to visit Arizona State on Jan. 11, a school he said he favors, even though he is currently a soft commit to rival Arizona.
Recent speculation on where Bass will play his college football has turned to the internet, where Bass' personal webpage on the popular myspace.com social networking site is decorated with Sun Devils "wallpaper" featuring the program's mascot.
"That's just my top school and I might de-commit from Arizona and commit to Arizona State when I'm on my visit," Bass explained on Thursday afternoon. "I think it's likely to happen.
"My parents favorite is Arizona State too. They're coming with me on my visit. They think it's a great fit for me. They like the coaching staff there and the way they talk about the academic part of it. It's a good football team. They think I'll have a chance to be more successful there."
Bass' recruitment is a bit unique, in that he considers himself a soft commit to one school, but says another school is his top choice.
In a previous interview, he explained it this way:
"I've already visited Arizona and I committed when I was there but after that I wasn't as sure and I wanted to look at ASU again. After the coaches coming to visit and thinking about it, I still liked ASU a little more, but I haven't taken my official there yet and we'll just see what happens when I do. I think I'll probably change but I just haven't gone on the visit yet."
The 5-foot-10, 195 pound Bass is a Rivals100 member, ranked 90th overall and No. 2 at the all-purpose running back position nationally. He is also the No. 27 prospect in California.
Another important component in the Bass recruitment is whether or not he will be a full qualifier academically.
When asked about this subject, Bass had the following to say:
"There are a lot of rumors and stuff going around right now about it. It'll be fine though. I have a plan and everything to make sure I'll be able to play (Division I football) next season. I am going to take some night classes next semester and also I might take some online classes too."
Bass has taken the SAT twice and he's scheduled to take it again on January 28th. He will also take an upcoming ACT exam. It's unclear exactly what score Bass will need to qualify, because it will depend on where his core grade point average is at when he graduates high school and how that correlates on the sliding scale used for NCAA Clearinghouse certification.
