Wave makes push for Texas safety
Jordan Garrett saw his fair share of water this week thanks to Hurricane Ike's collision with the Texas coast.
But that may not keep the safety from Beaumont, Tex., from seeing additional Waves in his future.
With the Tulane staff seeking athletic bodies in the secondary for the 2009 class, they leaped early at Garrett, who fits the mold at 6-foot and 190 pounds.
"Right now, I am riding with them strong because for them to offer me before the season even started was a big deal for me," Garrett said. "I look at it as them having faith in me before they saw what I could really do. I am kind of riding with them for them to do something like that. It's special."
Garrett does it all for Texas 5A power West Brook High School - serving as a safety, cornerback, running back and wide receiver. But he says whatever role he fills is fine as long as certain goals are met.
"I like to make plays," said Garrett, who intercepted two passes and had a 37-yard touchdown run in a game against Ozen earlier this year.
"I like to put my team in position to make plays and see my teammates do a lot of things. Come crunch time, if they need me, I like to say I am the person that has the coach's trust to call my number to get the job done. Other than that, I just love the game and want me teammates to have success."
Tulane coaches hope Garrett joins West Monroe's D.J. Banks and Plaquemine's Ryan Travis as players joining the Tulane secondary in 2009.
"I have been trying to keep in touch with Coach Davis and trying to see what is going on," Garrett said. "I haven't been able to sit down and watch because of the storm because we have been kind of on the move, so it is holding me back.
"Tulane is a nice school. I will go. They have a nice football program. I think it is somewhere I can go and kind of help turn the program around with some other big time recruits coming in with me. I'm in love with the game, so anywhere is fine with me."
