BELLE GLADE - Jupiter Christian, the two-time defending Class 1B state champions, simply had no chance of competing with the RivalsHigh 100 No. 20 team, Glades Central, in this one. In Glades Central's 34-0 trashing of Jupiter Christian, all the Raiders really had to do on defense was stop Eagles two-star QB Maryshal Rothman.

And that they did - by the way of an astonishing nine sacks and an interception.
Rothman (4-for-12 passing, 55 yards, 1 INT) was in trouble all night, as he was able to get the Eagles past midfield just twice in the game. The only real chance Jupiter Christian had to score in this contest was in the beginning of the third quarter - off an onside kick that the Eagles recovered.

Down 27-0 at this point, Jupiter Christian was facing a fourth-down play from Glades Central's 45-yard line - which turned out to be Rothman's lone passing highlight.
The Eagles QB connected with WR Weston Pederson (two catches, 40 yards) on a 30-yard pass to the Glades Central 15.

Jupiter Christian would never get down the field that far again, as Glades Central sophomore LB Dominc Gibson (12 tackles, two sacks) later picked off Rothman to end the Eagles scoring drive.

Gibson's interception, which came on a fourth-and-18 play from Jupiter Christian, was preceded by a sack by Raiders junior DE Robert Way (14 tackles, four sacks) on third down.

Way's sack, an 8-yard loss on third down from the Glades Central 15, was one of many plays from the Raiders defense that led Rothman to second guess himself after the game.

"I should have just thrown the ball away," Rothman said.

Not that it would've helped much for the Eagles. Glades Central (7-0) limited Jupiter Christian's offense to 56 total yards in the game (55 pass, 1 rush). Jupiter Christian senior running back Will Powers was held to 28 rushing yards on 13 carries, while teammate Trey Pendergrass had just 22 yards on six carries. And Rothman (sacked nine times) recorded -49 yards rushing, courtesy of those nine Glades Central sacks.

"Our defense was confident and excited," Gibson said of the Raiders.

"The defensive line stepped up big time, allowing us to make all those plays. This is the best we've played the whole season so far."

In many ways, the same could be said for Glades Central's high-octane offense. Raiders senior QB L.J. Thomas picked apart Jupiter Christian's defensive backs, as he was 16-for-23 with 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Thomas connected with Glades Central senior TE Clive Walford on a 9-yard touchdown pass to put the Raiders up 27-0 with just 40 seconds left in the first half.

And three-star ATH Greg Dent (five catches, 75 yards) put the exclamation point to Glades Central's dominant performance on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Thomas with 6:10 left in the game for the final score.

Glades Central's running game was led by Neville Brown (eight carries, 70 yards) and Carlton Lewis (six carries, 58 yards), who both scored touchdowns in the first half.

"The running game worked for us," Thomas said. "Our passing game didn't have to do too much. We had a balanced offense and we had Jupiter Christian's defense on their toes the whole night."

Jessie Hester, Glades Central's second-year head coach, summed up his team's performance.

"A lot of our kids had standout performances on both sides of the ball," Hester said. "Our offensive line played solid and opened up holes for the running backs. You need guys to step up when you have players who are out with injuries. They played tremendous tonight."
