The football season at Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley Northwest ended earlier this month. But it was one no one associated with the team will soon forget.

The school advance to the playoffs before bowing out in the first round. And while it was led by many star players, everyone will remember senior reserve defensive end Kyle Weafer.

WORTH A READ
There are a lot of inspirational stories in high school athletics:

The 7-4 middle schooler who joined the football team (with video).

The Tennessee FB player who slept in his school's press box until a town resident took him in.

The Arizona team that wore pink to raise money for breast-cancer awareness.

The Missouri boy with Down snydrome who ran for a touchdown.

Weafer is autistic. And was able to participate in only a few plays all season. But his spirit for the game and dedication to the team left an impact.

So much so that they nominated Weafer for the national "Rudy Awards," named for Rudy Ruettiger, the famed Notre Dame practice player who eventually made his way into a game.

Kyle's parents, Bob and Lisa, moved from California to Overland Park to give Kyle better educational opportunities. They never dreamed that would one day include sports, but when it did, they were thrilled to see the school would be accommodating.

"I said, 'Anybody that wants to play football has a soft spot in my heart,'" head coach Mike Zegunis told Mark Dewer in a terrific profile that ran in The Sun.

"I love the game, and I love coaching it. And anybody that wants to, I want them to be able to have that experience."
