Running back Brandon Gainer has left the UK football team, it was announced on Friday.

Gainer, a 5-foot-11, 207-pound tailback, would have been a redshirt sophomore in 2012. He entered spring practice fifth on the depth chart behind CoShik Williams, Josh Clemons, Raymond Sanders and Jonathan George. But he didn't practice with the team at all this spring as he focused on his academics.

Gainer played in three games in 2011, finishing the year with 11 carries for 39 yards. A Miami native, he was ranked as the No. 30 running back in the country in the class of 2010.

Gainer is the eighth player to leave the team or be dismissed since the end of the 2011 season. Only one of those players started a game last season.
