Two Words Define This Week In High School Football: The Opening

What is about to hit Beaverton, Oregon today is a storm of football talent.  A whirlwind whipped up to a froth and gobbling up in its path from Florida to Oklahoma and Texas and California too all of the top talent in the country that it can grab.

Big towns and little towns too.  No corner of the Nation was left untouched and when this baby lands at the Nike World Campus it will become the event of all events.

It is a happening, a once in a life time thing for the kids.  It is simply put…

The Opening.

The Press release gives you the broad strokes:

Today Nike announced the schedule for “The Opening” presented by Nike Football – the ultimate football training experience – four days of dynamic training, coaching and competition for 150 of the country’s most elite high school football players.
Designed to give student-athletes the training and knowledge to develop their speed, explosiveness and position skills, “The Opening” brings together top prospects – all battling for the chance to claim ultimate bragging rights.
Every position and every aspect of the game will be highlighted over the course of the four day program (July 5-8) with players being put to the ultimate test by the world’s top athletes and coaches.  Nike will ultimately crown winners for the Nike 7ON tournament, Nike Linemen Challenge, and SPARQ Rating National Championship.
As advertised this is a huge event and Nike flexes their muscles like no one else can.  Many of the athletes coming are rated among the top in the Nation.  And when your watching them compete your watching the future of the NCAA and the NFL.

While most analysts will be there only a few get invited inside the ropes to do in depth coverage.  Given our standing and performance the past decade we will be among those doing the detailed stuff and inside rather then out.

We of course are interested in the National Scene and big timers.  But our focus will be on the boys of the Pacific Northwest as usual.

This year the following athletes were invited:

  • Max Browne (Washington) ; Skyline High School's Top Rated QB and USC commit.  Mad Max is considered #1 in the Nation by Rivals.com and will have a battle on his hands to maintain that against most of the Nation's Elite QB's.
  • Thomas Tyner  (Oregon); Aloha High School.  Tyner is still rated #1 at the RB spot in the Nation by Rivals.com and was one of the first guys invited and while it is not clear yet if he will be there the amazing speedster is now 215 pounds and healthy.  If he shows we will have his story.  He is an Oregon Duck commit.
  • Johnny Ragin (Oregon) ;  The Wilsonville stud earned his way in by sheer grit transforming himself into one of the finest athletes in the Nation.  His 117 SPARQ Rating got him a bid as one of the top Pure Athletes in the Region.  He will be a linebacker and receiver during the 7 On portion of the event and we think will rise the ranks fast after this event.  He holds an Offer from BYU and a host of other D-1 AA schools.
  • Skyler Phillips (Oregon) ; Churchill High School is home to this young man who we were fortunate enough to meet at the SPARQ Combine at Tigard High School in June and help get invited to the Nike NFTC Camp where he stole the show and won the MVP for O-Line.  His overall size at 6'3", 330 pounds is right up there.  But it was his near 100 SPARQ Rating that set him up as one of the premier big men in the Nation athletically.  The kid has some serious football skills and we predict a lot of Skyler Phillips talk at the camp.  A complete unknown outside Eugene less then a month ago is about to open some eyes.  Watch for his stock to rise and some offers to come after this event.  The "feel-good" story at The Opening for sure.

Good luck to all these guys as we move ahead into the next few days.
