2011 In Review: The Chiefs were 7-4, losing to Summit in the North Jersey Section 2 Group 2 semi-finals after beating Orange. They scored 245 points for a 22.27 average, while allowing 212 points for a 19.27 average. Wins included Cedar Grove, Orange, and Verona, while losses included West Essex, Weequahic, and Shabazz.

Departures: FB/LB Tyler Condit - New Haven

Offense: Caldwell runs a multiple offense and returns seven starters and another who played. Senior Sonny Puzzo (6-foot-1, 175) is back at quarterback, while senior Mark Mattheiss (6-foot-0, 175) will be the running back after getting playing time. The fullback will be used as an h-back position, including senior Andrew Goodman (6-foot-1, 180), who started at wide receiver and will still play there. Some tight ends will also be used here.

At tight end, senior Billy Pierce (6-foot-3, 230) is a three year starter and senior John Gallagher (6-foot-1, 215) will also play often in two tight end sets, moving from guard, where he was a starter. There is also a very good group with several others pushing for time. At wide receiver, Goodman returns and both senior Sean Nastelon (6-foot-4, 220) and junior Jack Kinney (6-foot-3, 175) will play. Nastelon missed much of the season with an injury.

Three starters are back on the line. Returning at center is senior Nick Sibilia (5-foot-11, 190), moving from guard. Also back are junior tackle Joe Galioto (6-foot-0, 205) and senior tackle Frank Hotaling (6-foot-1, 215). Hotaling may play guard, with senior Griffin Smith (5-foot-10, 250) playing tackle and he was a defensive starter. The other guard is open for competition.

Defense: The Chiefs run a multiple 50 and return eight starters. The ends return and they are interchangeable with other positions: Pierce, Gallagher, and Goodman. Galioto and senior James D'Agostino (6-foot-0, 210) are back as tackles, while Smith is back at nose guard. Smith will be pushed by junior Joe Valentino (5-foot-8, 180), with other players being in a rotation on the interior.

Linebacker has Pierce and Gallagher, depending on the rotation. Also in the picture are junior Jim Stille (5-foot-10, 180), senior Steven Machi (6-foot-0, 180), and sophomore Jake Carpentier (6-foot-0, 200). Stille saw action here last year.

In the secondary, Puzzo returns at strong safety and Goodman is back at cornerback. One cornerback may be senior Ray Iodice (6-foot-0, 175, who played. Mattheiss and Kinney may figure at corner or safety, along with senior Ramzi Kurzum (6-foot-0, 170).

Special Teams: Gallagher returns as a top kicker and he is in the running at punter, along with Puzzo. The return men are Mattheiss, Nastelon, and junior Michael Gurriere (5-foot-7, 160).

Question Marks: Keeping players healthy. The team usually gets better during the season. The kids are hardworking, good students, and have the guidance of a top coaching staff.

Recruiting: Pierce is a 1-AA candidate receiving a lot of interest. He is also a long snapper. Gallagher as a kicker is interesting some 1-A schools. Puzzo is a prospect at the 1-AA level. Others can go D3 with a good year.

It is still early for the underclassmen.

Coach's Comments: "We've been successful for many years and are excited about this year. Many are back who started or played. They're working their butts off and things are looking good." -Head Coach Ken Trimmer
