Good Counsel's narrow win over Gilman in a battle between the top two teams in the preseason rankings allows the Falcons to retain the overall No. 1 ranking in the first Maryland media state poll for the 2012 season.

Quince Orchard, the lone public school in the top five, slides up to No. 2 followed by Calvert Hall, Gilman and DeMatha.

The state poll welcomes two new members this week, Friendly at No. 24 following its win over previously state-ranked Thomas Johnson and Westminster at No. 25.

While the No. 3 Calvert Hall vs. No. 5 DeMatha and No. 22 Urbana vs. No. 25 Westminster are the only head-to-head meetings between top 25 teams, there are several match-ups of ranking interest. No. 14 Patuxent, No. 19 Seneca Valley and Friendly takes on teams that are in the others receiving votes.
