2011 In Review: The Spartans were 9-2, losing to St. Joe's (Montvale) in the Non-Public Group 3 semi-finals, after beating DePaul. They scored 288 points for a 26.18 average, while allowing 180 points for a 16.36 average. Wins included Union, Elizabeth, and Linden, while their other loss was to Westfield.

Departures: WR/DB Shayne Jones - Villanova, OL Jon Hoffman - Lafayette, OL Greg Rommel - Bloomsburg (Pa.), RB/DL Kellen Sperduto - Sacred Heart, DL Logan Whitaker - Bridgeport, OL Pierce Frauenheim III - Gettysburg, LB Jake Evanko - Gettysburg, WR Tyler Scott - East Stroudsburg (Pa.), LB Blair Cook - New England State

Offense: Immaculata runs a multiple spread and returns three starters and three others who saw heavy action. Returning for his third year at quarterback is senior Antonio Natale (6-foot-2, 205). Backing him up is a quality player in senior Sean Palen (6-foot-2, 190). Running back has several competing, with the top two being junior Sal Fama (5-foot-9, 190) and senior Chris Marrie (6-foot-0, 190). Also pushing are senior Erik Perrotta (6-foot-0, 195), junior Vinnie Sokalski (6-foot-0, 200), and sophomore Ian Fallon (6-foot-1, 180).

Wide receiver has three who saw a lot of playing time last year in senior Trevor Soccarras (5-foot-10, 180), junior Connor Vanderbeek (5-foot-8, 185), and junior Chandler Vanderbeek (5-foot-8, 185), with all three being used in the either the slot or split out wide. Another wide receiver is senior Sebastian Hofmann (6-foot-1, 180). Also in the mix are senior Tashawn Bower (6-foot-5, 243) and junior Joe Vitiello (6-foot-4, 255), with both being used as tight ends and wide receivers.

Two starters return to the line in senior Matt Charneski (6-foot-1, 250) and junior Kole Schleimer (6-foot-3, 260). In the running at the other three positions are senior Joe Nowitzke (6-foot-2, 240), senior center Jake Sniscak (6-foot-2, 255), senior Pat Rooney (6-foot-3, 260), junior Vitas Hrynkiewicz (6-foot-4, 275), junior Alex Reszutek (6-foot-2, 240), and sophomore Dan Peltack (6-foot-2, 240). The five best will play and they will fit the positions, with Sniscak and Peltack competing at center.

Defense: The Spartans run multiple three and four man fronts, returning three starters and five others who saw quality time. The ends return in Bowers and Vitiello, with Bower a three year starter. In the running at the tackles are Charneski, Nowitzke, Sniscak, Rooney, Schleimer, and Hrynkiewicz.

There is experience at linebacker, with Fama returning and Marrie, Perrotta, and Sokalski all getting time. Junior Connor Mullen (6-foot-0, 190), sophomore Griffin Vanderbeek (5-foot-11, 185), and Fallon will all be in the hunt for time.

Conner Vanderbeek and Chandler Vanderbeek received playing time in the secondary. Also in the picture are Soccarras, senior JT Himelrick (6-foot-2, 180), senior Terrence Hunter (5-foot-11, 190), and senior Steve Morrissey (5-foot-11, 163).

Specials: Senior Matt Kassebaum is a three year starter at kicker and he will also punt this year. The return men will Soccarras, Connor Vanderbeek, and Chandler Vanderbeek.

Recruits: Bower committed to Auburn. Natale is getting 1-A/1-AA looks. Soccarras has offers from Lehigh, Holy Cross, Georgetown, and Old Dominion. Charneski can go anywhere from 1-AA to D3. Others can play somewhere in college.

Vitiello is a 1-A/1-AA prospect. Others can be D2/D3.

It is too early for the sophomores.

Coach's Comments: "I anxiously await my 47th season as the football coach at Immaculata. After the season, I plan on retiring as football coach at Immaculata. I am also retiring as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal after 50 years with the school. We hope to return to the playoffs this year and win the big one again.
