MORE: No. 1 Aquinas holds off No. 4 Byrnes | No. 2 Elder drops game to No. 31 St. Xavier

Down by a touchdown to the nation's top-ranked team, Byrnes did what was expected - it gave the ball to the nation's top-ranked running back. Marcus Lattimore, however, didn't deliver.

Lattimore was stripped of the ball for the second time during his team's big game against St. Thomas Aquinas. Both miscues led to touchdowns and helped Aquinas - last year's national champ - keep a firm grip on the top spot in the country.

What school should be behind it? That's about as slippery as Lattimore found the ball Friday night.

No. 4 Byrnes wasn't the only top team to go down. No. 2 Elder and No. 3 Lowndes also lost, leaving a gapping hole in the RivalsHigh Top 100 rankings.

So Who's No. 2?

Perhaps No. 5 Cedar Hill, the top team in Texas.

Or maybe No. 6 Northwestern in Miami - one of three Florida schools that figure to be in the Top 10.

And then there's two traditional East Coast powers, No. 8 Don Bosco Prep from New Jersey and No. 9 DeMatha from Maryland.

Looking for long shots? How about No. 14 John Curtis from Louisana or No. 20 Fort Thomas Highlands from Kentucky.

The new rankings will come out Monday, but the talk started late last night.

RivalsHigh 100 Teams in the running for the No. 2 spot in the country
Contenders

TEAM: Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes Rebels
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 4 Nationally, No. 1 South Carolina
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: Byrnes came into the game No. 4 in the country and gave the No. 1 team, St. Thomas Aquinas, all it could handle. They were not expected to win the game but Marcus Lattimore and company could justify moving up if we think there isn't a better team out there.
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: Byrnes had its shot to move up, and fumbled it away. It played well against Aquinas but not close to good enough to argue for No. 2 in the country. It also doesn't have enough high level games left on the schedule to prove it is the second-best team in America.

TEAM: Miami (Fla.) Northwestern Bulls
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 6 Nationally, No. 2 Florida
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: The Bulls are loaded with stars and they are proven winners. Following a reload in 2008, Northwestern has shown they have what it takes to win.
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: Northwestern has come out slow the last few weeks and have had to have vocal leader Todd Chandler fire up the team to turn on the jets late. It also is not 100% that they are better than Miami Central so the seed of doubt is certainly in play. It also has yet to play Booker T. Washington, which could give it a loss before the rankings are compiled.

TEAM: Ramsey (N.J) Don Bosco Prep Ironmen
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 8 Nationally, No. 1 New Jersey
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: The Ironmen will be sending 10 seniors to Division I colleges and have just as much talent as any team in the country. IT also has two huge wins already over De La Salle (CA) and Prattville (Ala).
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: The arguement will always be there, can an East Coast team really play with the big boys in Texas or Florida? Prattville did run off 24 points in a row before Tony Jones lead them back for the win on the road.

TEAM: Hyattsville (Md) DeMatha Stags
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 9 Nationally, No. 1 Maryland
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: DeMatha, like many teams on this list is loaded with talent, highlighted by RB Marcus Coker. It also has a very good coach, Bill McGregor, who has been at the school for over 30 years. Being the best team in a talent rich area adds to its argument.
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: Are they really No.1 in their state? The Stags will get their first real test next week when they meet up with Good Counsel. IF it can win that game they can make a good arguement for No. 2 but for right now has it done enough?

TEAM: Loganville (GA) Grayson Rams
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 15 Nationally, No. 2 Georgia
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: Grayson started the year in the Top 10 and with the loss by Lowndes they will move back to the No. 1 spot in a very solid Georgia football landscape. The early concerns of a lack of offense may have been answered with a couple breakout games.
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: The same reason it dropped out of the No. 1 spot in Georgia to begin with - the offense. Shawn Green has the defense clicking right now, especially up front, but to win the state you will need to score points.

TEAM: Dallas (Texas) Skyline Raiders
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 Ranking: No. 16 Nationally, No. 2 Texas
WHY IT SHOULD BE NO. 2: Skyline is one of the most talent heavy teams in the country. Before this week kicked off the thought was to move them to the No. 1 spot in Texas, which is basically a free pass to a Top 5 national ranking. Corey Nelson leads a very stingy defense with an equally explosive offense taboot.
WHY IT SHOULDN'T BE NO. 2: Can you really jump from No. 16 to No. 2? While not an unprecidented leap it would be a bit mutch to jump that fast that quick. There is also the motivation factor as some have questioned whether the team "wants it" bad enough.

PRETENDERS

TEAM: Cincinnati (Ohio) Elder
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 2 Nationally, No. 1 Ohio
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: Unfortunately the Panthers lost 17-7 to St. Xavier Friday night. They have the talent on the field and the remaining schedule that they could end in the Top 10 if they win state.

TEAM: Valdosta (Georgia) Lowndes
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 3 Nationally, No. 1 Georgia
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: Lowndes dropped a tough 10-7 decision to Northside Warner Robins. After a hot start to the season, No. 3 may be its peak.

TEAM: Cedar Hill (Texas)
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 5 Nationally, No. 1 Texas
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: The Longhorns were on their way down entering play Friday so suddenly moving them to No. 2 would be against the analysis. They are more likely to wake up in the teens than No. 2.

TEAM: Madison (Miss.) Central
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 7 Nationally, No. 1 MIssissippi
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: We have not seen enough of Madison Central to think they are the second best team in all of America. While Mississippi football has been good of late this squad may be topping out in the 5-10 range.

TEAM: Chesapeake (Virginia) Oscar Smith
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 10 Nationally, No. 1 Virginia
WHY THEY WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: The Tigers narrowly escaped a loss to a team they should have beat handily last week. It was also the second game they scuffled through in the early going. They could end the season No. 2 but it won't come in the first week of October.

TEAM: Peoria (Arizona) Centennial
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 11 Nationally, No. 1 Arizona
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: Centennial is a very good team and the certainly deserve its current ranking, but to put it No. 2 in the country would be to assume they are better than the best team in neighboring Texas ... which we are not prepared to do.

TEAM: Miami (Florida) Central
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 12 Nationally, No. 3 Florida
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: While we are not sure that Miami Northwestern is the No. 2 team in the country it is because of the Rockets. But untio further notice Central is No. 3 in Florida - which this year may also be a Top 10 national placement.

TEAM: Westlake Village (California) Oaks Christian
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 13 Nationally, No. 1 California
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: Oaks is a very good team, and they have a great win against the best in Washington, on the road no less. But at this stage of the season, the rest of Oaks schedule is simply not good enough to justify the No. 2 ranking. Check back after a CIF Bowl (if they are awarded one) for a better placement.

TEAM: River Ridge (Louisiana) John Curtis
CURRENT RIVALSHIGH 100 RANKING: No. 14 Nationally, No. 1 Louisiana
WHY IT WON'T BE NO. 2 ON MONDAY: Curtis struggled against Salmen in its second game of the season. Not that Salmen is bad in any way, just more was expected than a narrow escape.
