The good: Blades is a good athlete who was a very productive defender over his three starting seasons. He is a tough competitor who gets the most from his athletic ability and has overcome his marginal size to be a fine playmaker. He displays outstanding instincts and the quickness to react to plays, and he finishes with strong tackling technique. He shows the mobility, speed and precise angles of pursuit to make plays outside the box. He is a fiery athlete and not afraid to take on blocks despite his size. The bad: He has only marginal size at just under 5-foot-11 and 235 lbs. Blades is somewhat limited and raw in pass coverage, especially when asked to turn and cover. He has average speed, change-of-direction skills and play recognition in the passing game. At the point of attack, he can get engulfed by big offensive linemen. He needs to diagnose quickly and use strong hand technique to be an effective inside run stuffer at the NFL level, where the size disadvantage will be huge. The skinny: The son of former NFL safety Bennie Blades, his versatility and athletic ability will help earn a roster spot as a backup while he learns the system and improves his technique. He will eventually start at middle or strong-side linebacker, and he has the makeup to be a good special-teams performer and quality backup early. He is a probable first day pick.
