Notes: Defensive end-tight end who also played basketball as a Missouri prep (spent his first two high school years in Iowa). Redshirted in 2008 because his eligibility was not verified by the NCAA Clearinghouse until the eve of the season. In '09, was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year (coaches) as well as Missouri's Freshman and Defensive Lineman of the Year after establishing a single-season sacks record - played all 13 games, starting the final 11, and registered 64 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 11½ sacks with five passes batted down and a forced fumble. Started 10 games in '10 and tallied 48-10-5½ with two batted passes, one interception and a forced fumble despite missing three games with a fractured right fibula that he suffered against San Diego State.
Positives: Excellent arm and body length. Terrific athlete. Shows outstanding initial quickness at the snap, almost violent and plays faster than he times. Consistently creates penetration and is very disruptive. Very agile and wins one-on-one matchups with ease. Can outquick defenders from the inside and shows explosive body power. Very good balance and coordination. Has a quick arm-over move to create leverage, knocks defenders off balance with slaps and is difficult to block. Flashes playmaking ability (see Oklahoma). Plays strong for possessing such a rangy frame and can set the edge much better than would be expected looking at his linear frame.
Negatives: Still fairly raw and has not yet figured out how to harness his talent - relies too much on his natural ability. Is high-hipped, tends to play a bit tall and narrow-based. Has been dinged up and must prove he can stay healthy for a full season. Is still immature and needs to figure out what it means to be a pro.
Summary: Played most of his last season with an ankle injury and evaluators that return to his freshman tape in 2009 will have even greater appreciation for his pass-rushing talent. Is at his best creating mismatches with his hand on the ground from the inside, and would fit superbly in a creative front such as that of the Giants, Rams or Titans where he could move all along the line. He is also athletic enough to warrant consideration as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Can make an immediate impact rushing the passer but his best football is a few years away.

NFL projection: Top-20 pick.
