2006 (Redshirt): Redshirted.
Personal: Born 3/31/88... undecided major... parents are Dan Klug and Mary Klug... high school coach was Carl Fruechte.
High School honors: First team all-state as a senior, honorable mention as a junior... Minnesota Vikings All-State team... LaCrosse Tribune Player of the Year... two-time first team all-conference... Player of the Year as a senior... two-time Winona Daily News All-Area team... Minnesota Mr. Football finalist... Career - - recorded 77 tackles, 20 quarterback sacks, 30 quarterback hurries and three fumbles as a senior... also had 1,212 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns... had 89 tackles, 18 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries as a junior... recorded 15 sacks as a sophomore... team captain... three-year letterwinner in football and wrestling, two-year letterwinner in track... qualified for the state tournament in football, wrestling and track.
Notes: Lightly recruited 215-pound linebacker-defensive end who also earned letters in wrestling (three) and track and field (two) as a Minnesota prep. Redshirted in 2006. Sat out '07 spring practice while recovering from January back surgery. Hurt his foot in August, underwent surgery and appeared in one game during the fall. Returned in '08, playing in 12 games as a reserve defensive tackle and recording 17 tackles, five for loss and two sacks with a forced fumble. Sustained a concussion on the opening kickoff against Iowa State and did not play against Pittsburgh. Started all 26 games over the next two seasons - totaled 65-13-4 with five batted passes and two forced fumbles in '09 and 57-13-5½ with three passes batted down and a forced fumble in '10. Did not work out at the Combine because of a right hamstring strain.
Positives: Well put together with a stout build. Strong, explosive hands to control. Good instincts, eyes and awareness. Maintains his feet through traffic. Plays with leverage and fights to get off blocks. Has quick hands to tug and work himself free. Moves well laterally. Chases hard. Active, intense and competitive. Mentally tough. Good character.
Negatives: Does not have a position - lacks ideal size and strength for the inside and speed and flexibility for the outside. Overpowered at the point of attack. Does not hold up vs. the double-team. Not an elite athlete. Durability could be a concern given his size.
Summary: Undersized, productive, high-motor, max-effort tweener with athletic limitations and overachiever traits. Has a similar temperament to former Hawkeyes linemen Mitch King and Matt Roth and consistently outperformed teammate Christian Ballard. Praised by coaches and scouts alike as a true "football player" with his main drawback being measurables that do not readily project to the pro game. The big question scouts must figure out is where to play him, but wherever he lines up, he'll find a way to be productive and elevate the play of his teammates. A player you win with.
NFL projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.
