Scouting Reports

Notes: Recruited as a linebacker and redshirted in 2006 before switching to defensive end in '07. Played in 13 games, starting two in place of the injured Auston English, and recorded 21 tackles, five for loss and one sack with a forced fumble. Did not play against Iowa State. Started all 14 games at a "flex" position (rush end/linebacker) in '08 and led Sooners linemen in sacks and tackles for loss by tallying 61-15½-8½ with four passes batted down and three forced fumbles. Started all 13 games in '09 and posted 69-19-11 with three batted passes, one interception and three forced fumbles. Sustained a sprained ankle against Stanford in the Sun Bowl. In '10, started all 14 games at defensive end and tallied 72-19-8½ with seven batted passes and three forced fumbles. Team captain.
Positives: Good instincts. Shows some natural pass-rush ability - anticipates the snap and has strong, active hands to slap, tug and rip. Good flexibility and body control. Competes and plays with leverage against the run. Productive behind the line. Nonstop motor - pursues hard and keeps working to the quarterback. Can sink into coverage. Smart and tough. Strong character and work ethic.
Negatives: Lacks a "wow" factor. Average athletic ability. Slow of foot and unsudden. Lacks edge burst and is not explosive - unimpressive vertical leap (28½ inches), broad jump (8 feet, 10 inches) and 10-yard split (1.81). Could stand to bolster arsenal of counter moves. Lacks power to jack tackles back with a bull rush. Too much effort-based production.
Summary: Experienced, durable, productive, three-year starter from a premier program who plays faster than he times and is a better football player than athlete. Could develop into a solid, balanced, 4-3 left end or be tried as a stand-up, strong-side linebacker. Limited upside.

NFL projection: Fourth- to fifth-round pick.
