Scouting Reports

Notes: Also lettered in basketball as a prep. Redshirted in 2006 as he nursed a turf toe injury. Started the season opener in '07 when Ravens '08 seventh-rounder Allen Patrick was injured. Appeared in 11 games and split carries, rushing 127 times for 764 yards (6-yard average) with 13 touchdowns and catching 14 balls for 60 yards (4.3) and zero TDs. Also returned 15 kickoffs for 439 yards (29.3) with two touchdowns. Was limited by a left foot injury in the regular-season game against Missouri and suffered a dislocated right kneecap during an onside kick against Texas Tech which ended his season. Underwent surgery and sat out spring practice while recovering. His 15 touchdowns (nine of which were scored against North Texas and Baylor) tied Adrian Peterson's OU freshman record. In '08, started 12-of-13 games in which he played and rushed 179-1,002-14 (5.6) with 31-395-4 (12.7) receiving and 28-774 (27.6) on kickoff returns. Set a school single-season record for all-purpose yards (2,171) before suffering a ruptured left hamstring returning the opening kickoff against Missouri in the Big 12 title game. Underwent surgery and was sidelined for the BCS Championship. Dealt with a right hamstring strain in August '09, but started 8-of-12 games and totaled 171-705-8 (4.1) rushing with 41-522-4 (12.7) receiving. Sprained his right ankle against Texas and sat out against Kansas. Healthy in '10, established OU career records for all-purpose yards (6,498) and touchdowns (64) as he rushed 282-1,214-15 (4.3) with 71-594-5 (8.4) receiving and 10-249 (24.9) on kickoffs in 14 starts. Elected to not run 60-yard shuttle at the Combine.
Positives: Terrific receiver out of the backfield - adjusts to throws, has soft hands, catches naturally outside his frame and was very productive in this area. Can stick his foot in the dirt and accelerate. Outstanding long speed. Showed playmaking ability when healthy. Versatile - can line up in the slot and was an impact kickoff returner.
Negatives: Durability is a concern - is built like a receiver, lacks bulk and has been very injury-prone, struggling to make it through a single season healthy despite never shouldering a full workload. Lacks the physicality and lower-body power to run inside. Runs upright, is straight-linish, very tight-hipped and exposes his frame to some big hits - will always battle injury. Average suddenness and elusiveness and can be late to the corner. Needs to get stronger as a blocker.
Summary: Narrowly built, one-cut, stretch-zone runner who will be overdrafted because of his size-speed combo, hands and return ability. Likely to spend a short-lived career in the training room once he has to deal with the rigors of the NFL.

NFL projection: Second- to third-round pick.
