Led by No. 1 and No. 2 St. Anthony of Jersey City and St. Benedict’s of Newark, this year’s final Rivals.com FAB 50 boys basketball national rankings are certainly good for New Jersey, but they also turned out to be good for California as no less than 10 teams from the Golden State ended up among the elite.

The final California team that had to go into the rankings was Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, which benefited from what happened in the Minnesota Class 4A state playoffs. First, previous FAB 50-ranked Hopkins of Minnetonka was knocked out by cross-town rival Minnetonka and then last weekend Minnetonka (28-3) ended up winning the state title with a 68-59 victory over Sibley of Mendota Heights. Earlier in the season, Minnetonka took on Campbell Hall and its UCLA-bound All-American standout, Jrue Holiday, and lost by a 90-61 score at the Target Center.

Campbell Hall’s victory over Minnetonka was one of many by California teams against top-level out-of-state opponents, including Fairfax of Los Angeles topping St. Patrick’s of New Jersey and Archbishop Mitty of San Jose beating New York Federation state finalist Holy Cross.

Speaking of Holy Cross, Sunday’s title game of the New York Federation Class AA state tournament saw the Knights fall to Lincoln of Brooklyn, 86-67. It was the second straight state title for the New York Public School Athletic League champs, who displayed too much depth for Holy Cross.

Lance Stephenson, ranked as one of the nation’s top juniors, led the Railsplitters with 16 points and 14 rebounds. He didn’t play for the entire second period after receiving a technical foul for dunking the ball after a timeout had been called. Teammate Justin Greene, also named to the all-tourney squad, helped Lincoln build its lead even with Stephenson on the bench.

Sylvan Landesberg, who played in the McDonald’s All-American Game in Milwaukee earlier in the week, had 31 points and 11 rebounds in his final game for Holy Cross.

In addition to Campbell Hall and Minnetonka (now at No. 50), other teams that went into the final FAB 50 rankings that were previously unranked include Kentucky Sweet 16 champ Mason County; Davis of Kaysville, Utah; Brownsburg, the Indiana largest class state champ; Jamesville-Dewitt of New York; and Newark of Ohio.
