Initial Ranking For 2009

The first RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings for 2009-10 are out. Forgive us if it looks a little like the last rankings of a year ago.

Findlay Prep of Nevada remains in the top spot of our rankings – a perch it maintained all of last season. It is followed by two other traditional powers: Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick and Mouth of River (Va.) Oak Hill Academy.

Yates (Texas) High is the top public school, coming in at No. 4 – but the battle of public vs. private is evenly split with each having five schools in the Top 10.

A few notes:

  • New Jersey is the only state with two teams in the top 10 as Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s comes in at No. 9. The Garden State has four teams ranked with Paterson (N.J.) Catholic coming in at No. 37 and Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony at No. 59.
  • California has the most teams ranked with nine, but the Golden State has more depth than dominance. Los Angeles (Calif.) Westchester is ranked No. 5, but it is the only school in the Top 25. Five of the nine are ranked No. 89 or higher.
  • Maryland has only three teams ranked, but it’s clearly quality over quantity. All three are in the top 16 with Rockville (Md.) Montrose Christian at 10, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic at 11 and Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton at 16.
  • The heartland is solidly represented at the top with teams from Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa and Michigan in the top 12.

And finally, three schools appear to have the best overall programs: Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic (No. 11 in basketball and No. 13 in football), Cedar Hill (Texas) High (No. 24 in basketball and No. 3 in football) and Concord (Calif.) De La Salle High (No. 91 in basketball; No. 81 in football) are the only schools to be in the RivalsHigh rankings in both sports.

With that, a look at the first RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings:

    TeamCityStateRecord
    1Findlay PrepHendersonNV
Findlay went wire-to-wire in the RivalsHigh 100 last year and there is no reason to think they should start anywhere but No. 1 again. With Nick Johnson, Jabari Brown, and Winston Shepard behind Marco Petrovic and Nigel Williams-Goss.
    2St. PatrickElizabethNJ
The Celtics ended 2008 at No. 4 in the RivalsHigh 100. Michael Gilchrist and Kyrie Irving lead a star studded lineup.
    3Oak Hill AcademyMouth Of WilsonVA
Oak Hill was in the hunt for a national title and finished ranked No. 2. They have reloaded and are set to make another run. Steve Smith is as elite level coach as you will find in basketball.
    4YatesHoustonTX
Yates won the 4A Texas state title last year and ended the season ranked No. 10 nationally. They return their entire starting five and should repeat in 2009.
    5WestchesterLos AngelesCA
Dominique O'Connor is gone from a squad who surprised many by winning the CIF Division I title. There are still plenty of great players on the floor for the Comets.
    6Bloomington SouthBloomingtonIN
The Panthers had a rare undefeated season in Indiana hoops in 2008. The 26-0 season was good enough for a ninth place finish nationally. There are still a lot of key pieces in place for this season.
    7NorthlandColumbusOH
Northland went 27-1 and finished at No. 16 last year. They bring back two Ohio State commits, including one of the best big men in the nation, Jared Sullinger.
    8Ames SeniorAmesIA
Ames ended the year No. 45 last season behind superstar Harrison Barnes. Barnes is back and his supporting cast is another year better. This could be the best Iowa team in the last ten years.
    9St. Benedict's PrepNewarkNJ
The Gray Bees are one of the best in the nation. This year they add Lithuanian national player, Gil Biruta, to the team. The sky is the limit for St. Benedict's.
    10Montrose ChristianRockvilleMD
The state of Maryland is a hot bed of basketball and Montrose will get the early nod as the No. 1 team in the region. It ended 2008 at No. 6 in the RivalsHigh 100.
